Dead Men Tell No Tales
|
Ok, another long time without a blog. Seams to be a habit now, but a summer job and
a summer semester at college will do that to you.
Another reason for the lack of blogging is the total lack of progress with any game of
mine. I had about three different ideas that all just kinda fell through. So I haven't done anything lately with GM.
Partly, I'm put off by the last YoYo competition. I mean, sure, I can see my game not making
the top three, but it didn't even make an honorable mention? I mean, that makes my game
lower than eighteenth. I didn't think it was that bad. It sometimes makes me wonder if
they even played it? Which for the record, none of the YoYo games staff's names ever
came up in the high scores. Not even the weeklies from what I saw. (Perhaps I just missed it)
I need to make my site more standards compliant. It doesn't display quite right in Firefox 3.
I have the fixed site ready. I just need to apply the fix to all of the pages. I bit time
consuming. I need to just spend the time to do it. Plus, once it's done, It will be easy
to change the look of the site. (CSS sheets) so maybe I can have a layout based on the seasons.
A Halloween theme would be fun to design.
I've taken a new approach to blogging. I'll slowly work on my blog for a few days whenever
I have the time, as opposed to trying to find the free time to type up an entire blog.
(In openoffice) For instance, I started this blog on the tenth of July. Using this
method I may be able to blog more often. I certainly plain on trying.
I have been still hanging around the GM scene, so I'm not out of touch. I just
haven't had much time to participate in anything. Maybe I should try to spend some
time to get exclusive information and post it in my blog. Hmmm....

I'm Sorry, really I am
|
It has been a long time since I last blogged. For that I am truly sorry. However,
it will most likely be a while before I blog again. I'll explain why later;
However, first let me explain why it's been a while for this blog.
I've been busy.
That's it.
Oh, you wanted the details.
Finals have been keeping me busy for the first part. I've finished all of them
however. Sadly I am going for a summer semester. so no break for me. However, I've
got a 4.0 so far! Lets hope things keep on that track. I start my summer semester on the
26, so I've got a little bit of a break.
Life has been keeping me pretty busy as well. We're putting down some floor in
the upstairs (The location of both my room and this computer.) so that kinda throws
things off. We should be finished with that soon.
In between putting the floor down, I've restored the computer. I bought an external
hard, drive backed everything up, and wiped it clean. Runs great and I've pretty much
installed all of the needed software back on. (game maker was one of the first.)
I think the 2 gb of extra ram I installed might also have something to do with it running better.
I only had 512 before, so it was a nice upgrade.
So thats about all I've done in that regard.
With game maker on the other hand I've done very little. I've finished Rosetta Stone.
Get it here:
YoYogames
Or Here:
Kengine Gaming
It's not doing very good in the competition. It currently has 2.7 by three members.
Yes, I know it's not instant playable on yoyogames yet, read Sandy's blog and you'll see why.
Other than finishing up Rosetta Stone I've done very little in GM. I most likely won't be
messing around with it for week or so. I'm taking a sorta breakish thing. I haven't stopped
thinking about my future games, I'm just taking a break from the coding part. (And that is
why I most likely won't blog again till about another month)
So thats why it's been so long since my last blog. Sorry! Perhaps to fill in
that previously mentioned gap I can do a blog or so on Linux. (Which I forgot to mention above)
I've installed it (Ubuntu) on a broken laptop of ours... But I'll save that for another blog.
So long!

Rosetta Beta 2
|
Here it is: A second beta of Rosetta Stone.
It now contains bugless highscores. (No more trying to submit and not being able
to.) I've reworked the score balance quite a bit on the Word mode. You get less
points for low words (Four to Five letters) and it rises quite a bit steeper after
that. So you now have more of a reason to spell longer words.
I've started to add a few sound fx's to the game. I've added an option to toggle sounds on/off.
In the Greek mode you can no longer add or subtract zero's from a number.
You can no longer divide by zero. I worked a hair on the balance of this mode's
points still needs to be fixed up a little bit more.
So go ahead and take this mode for a spin! Tell me what you think.
Rosetta Beta 2
Now, I hope I'll be able to get the tutorials done in time for the comp. College
finals will be coming up though so I won't really have time for a last week crunch
type of thing. So Whatever I can get done about a week or so before the comp ends
is all that I will be able to get done.
Another thing that just hit me. None of my slightly older games run on vista.
(Such as Puck) I'll most likely spend a little bit of time to update all of my
gm6 games so they run on vista. I've the gm6 game converter, so it's just a matter
of downloading the game converting the exe and re-uploading. I only have three or so games to do it to.
For once I really don't have any more game ideas floating around in my head.
(Don't get me wrong, I have lots of other game ideas, just none that I'm currently
planning on doing after Rosetta Stone) So once I finish Rosetta Stone, I'll most
likely be taking a little time to decide on my next project.
How many icons do you have on your desktop?
(Normally for me it's eight, at the moment it's twelve because I have a few RS related things there.)
I await your feedback…

64digits exclusive (almost)
|
I’ve gotten a beta of Rosetta Stone out. It contains both game modes and I’ve got
the music in there. (Sorry, still no sound fx’s)
The game does have working online highscores for both game modes. However,
I will have to clear all of the beta scores for the final release because I
will most likely fiddle a little more with the score balance. However, You can
see how you stack up against all of your fellow 64digiters. (This is pretty much
the only place that gets the game, I post this blog on my site as well, but I
don’t think it gets to many views there. Hence the "exclusive (almost)")
So please give me feedback and everything. This is extremely important. What do
you think of the number version? Original? Fun? Crummy?
How about the graphics?
How about the music?
How about the highscores?
If you read back a few blogs of mine I mention a Dev log I was keeping for Rosetta
Stone. Well…. I stopped that a long while ago. At first it worked well. Then it
just became more of a hassle than it was a motivator. At first every time I thought
of the Dev log I would jump on my game so I would have something to add. But I got
tired of it and it lost it’s effectiveness. Maybe I can keep up one for my next game.
So what do you think my games chances are in the YoYogames comp? First? Second?
Third? Honorable Mention? Last? Go ahead predict what place it will come in! Then
we’ll see how it comes out in the end. I wonder who will guess the closest…
Overall, I was really glad about the comp. I had had this game idea for a while
and when this competition came up I thought it would fit perfectly. And the Comp
made me push it to a level of polish that I most likely have never met and it made
me get it out faster than I normally ever would have. So I’m pretty happy.
Well, that’s it! I look forward to your names in the highscores list! Remember to leave feedback!

Rosetta Stone Alpha
|
Here you go, I've finally got an alpha release out. All feedback is welcome.
Please give me more than just, "That's nice". I'm shooting for feedback. A game
like this needs a lot of balancing. (Pun intended)
Rosetta Stone Alpha
Small list of credits for the demo. (There isn't a credits screen in the demo so.)
Jeff Dahl - Egyptian Drawings
EricDB - Word dll
Not much I can think of off the top of my head. I've got a few more ideas and
balance issues I want to check into and mess around with. But I thought I should
get a public alpha out first to get a little more feedback.
Two direct question I will ask are about the online high scores. I plain on
having an alltime and a weekly (Kinda like I did for Element Mine). However,
do you think a Daily or 48 hourly high score would be desired as well? Or would
it merely be a waste of time? I personal am leaning towards having the 48 hours one. What do you think?
Second, Do you think an outside of game high scores list would be wanted? Like
I did with Element Mine here. Element Mine Highscores
I can do it again, but I most likely won't bother wasting my time unless I think
enough people really want it.
That's pretty much it. Just give me feedback on everything if you can. The more
the merrier! Oh, And if you haven't got a clue as to what I'm talking about,
Check the blog right before this one.
